The Routes - Reverberation Addict CD (Otitis Media)
First, they took on the songs of Kraftwerk, and now The Routes are back with a collection of Buzzcocks tunes that they’ve turned into rock n’ roll instrumentals. The UK punk pioneers were known for their unrelenting energy and incredibly catchy melodies - you could almost argue that the Buzzcocks were the most melodic of the original punk rock bands. So it’s not surprising that their catalog would lend itself well to an album like this. The Routes expertly make the songs their own - these aren’t merely faithful cover songs that just have the lead guitar playing the vocal lines. Instead, they creatively take the songs in new directions - some sound like 50’s rock n’ roll hits or 60’s surf tunes, while others have a more modern sound with crunchy guitars. The album features some of Christopher Jack’s best guitar work to date, and his performances on Buzzcocks hits like “Ever Fallen In Love”, “Noise Annoys”, and “Orgasm Addict” are outstanding.
