The Atlantics - Still Making Waves CD (Atlantics Music)
This BRAND NEW album by legendary Australian surf/instro band The Atlantics is an absolutely amazing, rich and rewarding listening experience. The lead cut, “Surfing the Wedge”, is a song that has the classic Atlantics sound, but with modern production and containing little bits from all of the players which echo classic songs from their past. The “echo” pun is partially intended, as the lead guitar has that classic echo and reverb sound that is just so exciting. Things don’t let up from there though - the next cut “Bass Strait” has a chugging rhythm, atmospheric organ lines and of course great, melodic lead guitar work. That’s followed by “Kirra Sunset”, which features a deep bass rumble that I believe is courtesy of a Fender VI - it’s a great, melodic mid-tempo tune that conjures up images of the ocean and the roar of waves hitting the sand. From there the quality stays at a high level - the disc does an excellent job with blending fast, uptempo tunes with a few slower ones. “Down To The Sea” features changing melodies and you'll dig the atmosphere conjured up by this tune. “Stranger On Mykonos” is another highlight, standing out as one of the best songs on the album and the perfect way to close it out. Overall it’s an outstanding collection of music from The Atlantics and it’s a great tribute to late drummer Peter Hood, whose drumming is featured on the final track of the disc.
