Martin Cilia – Going To Kaleponi CD (Bombora)
Martin Cilia is perhaps best known as a current member of legendary Australian surf band The Atlantics. However, if that’s all you know him for, you’ve really been missing out. He is a great solo artist too, with a great surf sound that ventures (pardon the pun!) into traditional Euro instro and Hawaiian textures and melodies. Despite these initial impressions, for this recording Martin says he was actually inspired by a visit to Southern California, swimming with dolphins and turtles in the ocean. The region is also the birthplace of surf music - while there he met and played with guitarist Paul Johnson of The Belairs and The Surfaris. “Kaleponi” is the Hawaiian word for California - you’ll hear the ukuleles of Hawaii, as well as the reverbed lead guitar of So Cal on this recording. All fifteen songs are original recordings, and all are absolutely stunning. This is not only Martin’s best recording yet, it’s without a doubt one of the top surf/instro releases of 2013.
