Little Kahuna - Summer By The Beach CD (Surf Jam) 

2024 is off to a good start with the release of the third CD from So Cal surf/exotica combo Little Kahuna. This album turns my mind away from all of that and conjures up images of warm beaches, rustling palm trees and gentle, refreshing breezes. There seems to be more of a Hawaiian/tiki/exotica influence with this release - the lead guitar is still the primary instrument throughout, but the songs have a smoother, more tranquil sound (for the most part) and feature additional instrumentation such as clavietta, sax and percussion instruments perhaps more associated with Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and Tak Shindo. That isn’t to say there aren’t any straight up surf tunes here - “Tiki Pop”, “Fool’s Gold”, and especially “Flying Coffin” are prime examples that they can deliver upbeat, driving surf rockers as well.
